Remembering Mike Miller
Many staff and families know that the School lost a dear member of our community this spring. Michael (Mike) Cadden Miller passed away on April 2, 2017 at the age of 74. Mike served St. Anne’s School as our Interim Director of Development between October and March. An internationally regarded independent school professional, Mike brought to all his work with us exceptional knowledge and generosity of spirit. Mike was critical in the School’s work developing our strategic vision, Inspire, Inquire, Innovate. The School is positioned for a thriving future because of this work in which he was closely involved.
Mike was a citizen of the world having dual residency in London, England and Watertown, New York (USA). After serving as an officer in the United States Air Force, Mike committed his 45-year career to the institutional advancement of independent and international schools across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In particular, he was the Director of External Affairs at The American School in London from 1998-2008 and Principal of MLW Consultants, LLC until his passing. Over the course of his career, Mike served professionally on the committees for the European Council for International Schools (ECIS) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Mike received the CASE Robert Bell Crow Award for Excellence in the Independent Advancement Field and the CASE Europe Award for Distinguished Service to International Schools. Mike was a great believer in supporting community and gave generously of his time and talent serving on countless boards and supporting numerous organizations in his hometown of Watertown including: Samaritan Medical Center, Orchestra of Northern New York, Northern New York Arts Council, Watertown Urban Mission, TIERS, First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, and many others.
Mike graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon (Class of 1960), Union College (Class of 1964), and completed his Masters in School Administration and International Education at the University of Michigan. Mike is survived by his husband, Clement Wong, his niece Debbie Jankanish and her husband Greg Jankanish, his niece Wendy Cadden Thomas and her husband Bill Thomas and their children, Benjamin Cadden Thomas and Mathew Thomas. A memorial service will be held on April 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 403 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601. All are welcome.
