Mathematical Association of America Competition

Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) has invited our Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade students to participate in the prestigious American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8) sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The AMC 8 is a timed 25 question multiple-choice test that develops and enhances students’ problem solving skills. The 40-minute examination provides problem solving and application questions that uses the concepts our students learn in school. While the test contains a variety of problems, they are designed to be within the reach of students. AACC is offering the AMC 8 on Tuesday, November 14 at 4:15 p.m. on their campus.

The AMC 8’s purpose is to help underscore the importance of problem solving in mathematics, promote excitement and positive attitudes about the study of mathematics, and stimulate student interest in pursuing upper level mathematics. With the increasing importance of mathematics in a variety of fields, the problem solving required in this contest can help inspire them to want to learn more mathematics. Based on their scores, students have the opportunity to earn a certificate that reflects their attainment, and could lead to more selective math contests. You can learn more about the AMC 8 on the MAA website (http://www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8).

Current families interested in having their child participate in the AMC 8 contest should e-mail Christian Pazdersky (CPazdersky@St.AnnesSchool.org) by Tuesday, October 31.
