Middle School Program

The St. Anne’s School of Annapolis Middle School program is designed to be academically challenging while providing generous amounts of time for in-depth exploration of a wide variety of concepts and questions. We instill the organizational, study, leadership and social skills necessary to make a successful transition to high school, college and beyond.

With an emphasis on exploratory learning, critical thinking and problem solving, our Middle School students engage in studies and assignments that are increasingly challenging and intellectually stimulating. Throughout the Middle School Program, essential questions provide a unifying framework for each grade that guide students’ thinking and exploration. Each grade’s essential question offers an integrated approach to all subjects and helps students make connections across subject areas.

Three programs – Advisory, Life Skills and Service Learning – set the tone for developing the whole child in every aspect of school life. Middle School students also have the opportunity to build leadership skills and serve as positive role models for our Early Childhood and Lower School students.

We integrate computers, software and other technologies to promote learning and to support instruction in all curricular areas. In addition to our Media Center and laptop classroom carts, all classrooms have computers with teacher-supervised internet access. The wireless laptop program allows students to access and process information from anywhere in the school. SMART Boards and wireless projectors in Middle School classrooms support our engaging curriculum and foster interactivity and collaboration.

The principles developed by the founders of the Northeast Foundation for Children are the foundation for our school’s social curriculum. We built upon this foundation in our Middle School Program using the structures outlined in Developmental Designs for Middle School, an approach based on the belief that the better the relationships are in a school, the more successful the students can be, both academically and socially. We believe our social curriculum is at the heart of our students’ success as they embrace learning, engage in the community and advance into their future with confidence.
