our sixth grade program
Physical Education
In Physical Education, the essential question focus for Sixth Graders is threefold:
- “What is my responsibility for fun and safety during physical education?”
- “What is my role for class leadership and teamwork?”
- “How can I focus on working with my classmates so everyone feels included?”
Students begin the fall semester with cooperative games and a review of responsive classroom techniques for proper warm-up with a focus on heart rate and flexibility. They also take the Fitnessgram test to assess and to measure their level of fitness and allow them to set future goals. During the fall, an Eating for Health unit begins and through the school year. Students complete several units on court games, with fundamental work on basketball and volleyball. The dance unit for the Sixth Grade integrates the Physical Education curriculum with Social Studies and Music. Students study the history and forms of dance along with the movement and the music associated with each era. Students work as a team to choreograph their own unique routine that reflects an era of their choosing. In the spring, students review their fitness goals from the fall, retake the Fitnessgram, and assess their results. Students have an opportunity to play and continue to work on skill fundamentals for tennis, lacrosse, softball and field games.
